On the Power of P Systems with Symport Rules

چکیده
A purely communicative variant of P systems was considered recently, based on the trans-membrane transport of couples of chemicals. When using both symport rules (the chemicals pass together in the same direction) and antiport rules (one chemical enters and the other exits a membrane), one obtains the computational completeness, and the question was formulated what happens when only symport rules are considered. We address here this question. First, we surprisingly find that “generalized” symport rules are sufficient: if more than two chemicals pass together through membranes, then we get again the power of Turing machines. Three results of this type are obtained, with a trade-off between the number of chemicals which move together (at least three in the best case) and the number of membranes used. The same result is obtained for standard symport rules (couples of chemicals), if the passing through membranes is conditioned by some permitting contexts (certain chemicals should be present in the membrane). In this case, four membranes suffice. The study of other variants of P systems with symport rules (for instance, with forbidding contexts) is formulated as an open problem.

Generating Languages by P Systems with Minimal Symport/Antiport
It is known that P systems with two membranes and minimal symport/antiport rules are “almost” computationally complete as generators of number or vector sets. Interpreting the result of the computation as the sequence of terminal symbols sent to the environment, we show that P systems with two membranes and symport rules of weight two or symport/antiport rules of weight one generate all recursi...
متن کاملNumber of Protons/Bi-stable Catalysts and Membranes in P Systems. Time-Freeness
Proton pumping P systems are a variant of membrane systems with both rewriting rules and symport/antiport rules, where a set of objects called protons is distinguished, every cooperative symport or antiport rule involves a proton, but no rewriting rule does. Time-freeness property means the result of all computations does not depend on the time it takes to execute the rules. The goal of this ar...
متن کاملThe Power of Symport-3 with Few Extra Symbols
Membrane systems (with symbol objects) are formal models of distributed parallel multiset processing. Symport rules move multiple objects to a neighboring region. It is known that P systems with symport rules of weight at most 3 and a single membrane are computationally complete with 7 superfluous symbols. It is also known that without any superfluous symbols such systems only generate finite s...
متن کاملMinimal Cooperation in Symport/Antiport P Systems with One Membrane
In this paper we consider symport/antiport P systems with one membrane and rules having at most two objects. Although it has been proved that only finite number sets can be generated by both OP1(sym2) (one-membrane systems with symport rules of weight at most 2) and OP1(sym1, anti1) (one-membrane systems with symport/antiport rules of weight 1), the exact characterization is still an open quest...
متن کاملTissue P Systems with Symport/Antiport Rules of One Symbol Are Computationally complete
We consider tissue P systems using symport/ antiport rules of only one symbol where in each link (channel) between two cells at most one rule is applied, but in each channel a symport/ antiport rule has to be used if possible. We prove that any recursively enumerable set of k-dimensional vectors of natural numbers can be generated (accepted) by such a tissue P system with symport/ antiport rule...
